“Christina, hey.”

I felt myself waking up to the sound of Billy’s voice. He was shaking my shoulder a little as he gently said my name. Soon after, my nose picked up the scent of… tomatoes? Cheese? Maybe garlic?

“Isthatapizza?” I mumbled. I was still coming out of whatever dream I was having, so things were a little hazy.

“What?” I heard the amusement in Billy’s voice.

Yawning, I sat up and rubbed my eyes. “I asked if that’s a pizza?” I pointed at the cardboard box Billy had in his hand, the branding on it revealing that I was correct.

“Yeah,” he nodded. “I thought it’d be nice to have something greasy. I also got us some garlic knots.”

“I know.”

“Well, let me have one,” I said impatiently.

Billy laughed and placed the food down on the little table at the front of the room. We both made our own plates and then sat down to eat. Billy turned on the TV, and some movie was playing. I had no idea what it was, but it made the two of us laugh.

Once we had both eaten and were resting, Billy suddenly got out of bed.

“I forgot that I picked up some clothes for you. I felt bad about not giving you time to pack before we hit the road.”

He handed me a shopping bag. Inside were a few essentials like jeans, t-shirts, and a few other items—even panties. That felt a bit intimate for him to buy, but he was going to be my husband, so I let it slide. I chose one of the floral dresses in the bag and held it up to my body.
